iOS 6: Part 5

Welcome back to another part in my series about everything iOS 6. Today we're going to talk about something completely new.






Passbook:

So Passbook is the new app coming with iOS 6 that basically turns your iPhone into a ticket. So say you want to go to the movies you can use your iPhone as the movie ticket. The same works for things like flights and concert tickets, etc. Passbook tells you all the information that your ticket normally would, like the balance left on your Starbucks card, or where your seat is at the concert. Passbook even claims to alert you in you're in the wrong airport terminal. And the handy thing is that the passes automatically pop up on your lock screen when they become needed. So if your movie is starting soon then the ticket will pop up and let you know that it's time and there it is conveniently placed for you.

So I've been pretty critical of some of iOS 6's new features but I have to admit that Passbook sounds pretty cool and actually really useful. So I approve this feature and I just wish that Apple would do more things like this. This is how you stay ahead of the competition. Of course the problem is that things like Google Wallet are already a thing. So Apple's got to do a lot more to win me over still.

TIE Fighter

Hello all,

I just want to let you know that I, Bryan, the Cake Loving Artist have debuted a brand-new video commentary series of the classic Star Wars game TIE Fighter.

It is an incredibly awesome game, and I have a lot of fun playing it.

Instead of placing you in the perspective of the Rebel Alliance, the galactic 'good guys', this game puts you behind the joystick of an Imperial TIE Fighter, and you get to experience the Star Wars galaxy from a different point of view. It pulls it off quite well, in my opinion--but you have to see it for yourself to believe it.

So join me as I enlist in the ranks of the Imperial Navy and hunt down some X-wings!

Recommendations of the Week: September 12th

My summer recommendations got me thinking about two things I really should have recommended a long time ago. As such, these recommendations are comic themed




Calvin and Hobbes

I hope you've heard of this. If you haven't, you should probably go and hear about it. Written by Bill Waterson... this is, in my opinion, they ONLY good newspaper comic. Ever. Everything from the art to the humour is all great. It strikes true to life, and covers a massive scope of topics. Read it. Like, go buy it and read it. Don't go and be cheap and find it online or something, buy one of the collections.




The Cartoon Guide to the Universe

This cartoon guide is... interesting. And comprehensive. That's important too. It's a funny, and often opinionated, trip through time. I heartily recommend the entire series. Note that the last two in the series are re-branded 'The Cartoon History of the Modern World' but they are essentially the same. A word of warning however, this is not for everybody, people who are offended by different opinions will probably be offended at least once in this book, not that it goes out of its way to do so or anything...
