Recommendations of the Week July 17

It's that time of the week again. We're still getting back into the swing of things, so bear with us.

Ernesto Guillermo
Normally I'm not much of an "alien" or sci-fi type of person so when it comes to shooters I tend to stick with the likes of battlefield and call of duty. But for whatever reason the other day I decided to pick up a copy of Crysis 3, and I'm not exactly sure why, but I love it! Maybe I like taking a break from the usual and busting out a massive mortar and blowing up guys that are currently hiding behind the cloak of their nano suit. Or Maybe it's the giant mech that you can ride around the map destroying everyone in your path. Either way it's a great game definitely worth checking out.
(PS, there might just be some Crysis 3 commentary coming out in the near future.)

Lorl
That's right folks, the infamous Steam Summer Sale is here at last! This is actually the first Steam sale I've ever participated in, but needless to say, I'm addicted. Trading cards, FEZ for $5, and enough games to last me the rest of the year. I've purchased over 12 games so far (some of them AAA titles) for only $60! That's the price of one new game!

A few tips and tricks I've picked up from Reddit are:

-Don't buy a game unless it's a daily deal, flash sale, or community choice. This is the cheapest these games will be for the duration of the sale.

- The above rule does not apply if it's the last day (July 22nd) of the sale. If your games haven't gone on super sale by then, go for it!

A few highlights so far have been...

Fallout New Vegas/Fallout 3 for $2.50 each.

Portal Bundle for 6.50

Hundreds of indie games for under $5!

Belle
My recommendation for the week is a flash game available on Steam called McPixel. The game is simple, although hard to explain. Your character is McPixel, a little guy who saves the day by finding and diffusing bombs. But diffusing bombs could be as easy as kicking someone in the butt, or throwing a cow into a vat of gasoline to make it explode and somehow the exploded cow knocks the bomb over and breaks the bomb. Or something along those lines.

The thing with McPixel is there’s no set way to do things- you just have to click around and hope that you don’t end up making out with Obama. Or being eaten by a killer whale. In fact, much of the game is you kicking people and being a general douche. I beat McPixel in about one and a half hours of gameplay, so it’s not extremely difficult. The art is fun, the music is good, and the premise is weird- and it’s only 99 cents on Steam! I recommend McPixel for a fun, entertaining summer game.

Urdon
You watch, forlornly, as the woman across from you flips her perfectly styled hair and chats to a friend. She's half foreign and half legs--and she ca switch effortlessly between two languages as if they are one. Don't you just wish you could be her (or a very feminine him, if you are so inclined)? Well, now you can with the crowd source created app DuoLingo.

Just kidding, I'm selling you on a free app here. But regardless, DuoLingo is a software that teaches you a new language through similar methods to Rosetta Stone--and it doesn't cost a exorbitant amount of money nor does it have in unnerving commercials. The user can choose from French, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian and German--with the option to learn as a native speaker of one of those languages, or from English translations. The app then gives you a skill tree to follow, like the ones in Skyrim but with way more work involved. Lucky you can still complete it from your couch though. Each tier is a different category; teaching you about food, animals, and common phrases, as well as basic grammar and spelling. The short and well taught lessons make it easy to forget this is a learning app, and using this is often found myself having far too much fun when it came to typing out how to say "where is the bathroom?" in French and what not. It even has s little life bar the depletes whenever you get a question wrong, and coins for when you finish a lesson. It tricks your brain into thinking its having fun and not working, which my brain personally likes a lot. In fact, my brain literally dictated that sentence to me, so you know it's true. And if your high school Spanish let you sail past such basic nonsense, do not fret because the app does give you an option to automatically skip to the more advanced lessons (be warned though: I took nearly 7 years of French and had to start at the beginning. No shame). Finally, while I do find that DuoLingo is great for brushing up my languages skills up faster than anything else I've found, I can't speak to how well it can teach an English speaker, with no prior experience, a new language. But regardless of that, it's fun, it's free, and it can make you sound like a hot foreigner in only a few days (so there was more than one reason I picked French). Don't expect to be fluent, but I guarantee you'll learn where the bathrooms and how to get alcohol within the few two levels, which is really good enough in my books.

Bryan the Cake Loving Artist
I recommend Buzz Aldrin's Race Into Space (or BARIS if you're a gangsta like me).
What better way is there to celebrate the 44th anniversary of the first Moon landing (On July 20th) than b
recreating the Space Race on your very own computer? In Race Into Space you can play either as the head director of either United States of America or Soviet Union's space program. You will receive money at the start of each year, and this sum will depend on how well you've done so far. Using this flow of money from the government, you must fly missions, starting with basic orbital satellites like Sputnik, and eventually work your way up to the coup de grace, a Moon landing. Of course, this is rocket science, so your missions aren't guaranteed to succeed--and your rival space agency may just make it to the Moon before you if you're not careful. So if you want to discover what it was like to head a space program during the Space Race, check this out! It is absolutely free, as it is an open source program based off the 1994 title of the same name: http://www.raceintospace.org/

Recommendations of the Week: July 3rd

Welcome to the first recommendations of the week for the month of July! This time around our recommendations are themed around awesome free apps and games!

Ernesto  Guillermo recommneds duolingo, a learning app that should help you learn a foreign language, INCLUDING Spanish.
Hatok recommends arguably the greatest achievement in history: Octodad. This crazily unique game has you steer an octopus, disguised as your average everyday father through his average everyday life without arousing suspicion. More importantly, this game has the best tagline, period: "Loving Father. Caring Husband. Secret Octopus."

Check it out here: http://www.octodadgame.com/

Save the Date is a strange take on the dating sim genre. A must play for anyone with a passing interest in story structure!

Check it out here: http://paperdino.com/games/save-the-date/

Lorl recommends Digital: A Love Story, an interactive novel with a chill soundtrack and relaxed gameplay. Like any good book, you won't be able to put it down once you've started! You play as yourself in a time portal to the early days of the internet. Those of you who remember dial up will love the nostalgia of that screeching noise every time you dial a new number, and others can experience this amazing torture for the first time ever. This is a short, relaxing game that you can beat in one sitting, with a few puzzles as an added bonus.
The story of digital gets more exciting the longer you play, and is rarely boring or monotonous. Best part is, it's completely free and roughly 35mb in size!

Check it out here: http://scoutshonour.com/digital/
Pro Game Tip: Don't forget to download the notepad program in-game, it's your most useful resource!

Recommendations of the Week: June 26 2013

Recommendations of the Week are back, and they've been revamped a bit! from now on, we'll each be giving one recommendation each per week. Hopefully this'll add some variety to the list!

Ernesto Guillermo recommends you get prepped for MLS and CFL now that hockey and basketball are over.
Go White Caps go!

Hatok recommends this up and coming youtube reviewer. Stuck between two pipes, this guy reviews classic Gameboy games with admirable dedication to staying in character.
http://www.youtube.com/user/TheLonelyGoomba
Lorl recommends the original Paper Mario for the Nintendo 64, a classic RPG with unique action gameplay and a funny script.

(Hatok's note: BEWARE OF STICKER STAR!!)

Bryan, the Cake Loving Artist, recommends OpenTTD. An open source recreation of the classic and very fun 1995 Transport Tycoon game. It's free!

Recommendations of the Week: January 9th

And with that nice winter break I am back and alongside me is a plethora of posts. In other words the normal Apps Plus schedule is going to be reinstated, starting with Recommendations of the Week. So, let's begin.

Bask In It:

Yes many of you will have just received a few items for Christmas and now is the time to live it up. You've got all these great new items, now make use of them! We both know that in a few weeks time anything you got will seem like something you've had forever and you'll no longer get that excited feeling every time you look at it, so make use of that excitement while it is still around.

Resolutions:

Of course now is also the time of the year that everyone sets some new years resolutions and starts going to the gym. And now is also around the time that people start getting lazy and stop going to the gym. So to them I say, you need to re-evaluate your resolutions. Pick something much smaller and more attainable. That way it is much easier to accomplish your goal and if you fail, you won't feel so bad. And remember, you're still in your prime, you've got decades and decades of new years resolutions to set ahead of you. So instead of aiming to knock 15 pounds off, why not aim for five? Sure it will take you three times as long to reach your goal, but you'll feel better and be much more likely to achieve it.

Recommendations of the Week: December 12th

Welcome back to another edition of Recommendations of the Week. Since we are nearing ever closer to Christmas I figured I'd do a couple for holiday season related recommendations.

Gift Idea: Magazine Subscription

It's getting close to Christmas and you still can't come up with a good idea for a present, well how about a magazine subscription? To me it is near the ideal gift. It's not too costly (especially with all the holiday season deals) and it's like you are giving that person a present every single month/week, plus you are supplying the person with something that they are interested in (presuming you get them the right subscription) which makes the gift more personal. So if you need a great idea, this might just be it.

Beverages: Everything Hot!

Yes the weather is getting colder and colder with each passing day, but that doesn't have to be a bad thing! Now you have an even better excuse to test out every type of coffee/hot chocolate/tea/etc. beverage out there! Just remember what you're buying, if you start trying everything at Starbucks then you might just have given up all the money you planned to spend on gifts.

Activity: Skiing

December brings the opening of most mountains and the start of the ski season for many. Sure December skiing can be a little wet and the snow base causes all sorts of grief to your skies, but hey, skiing is skiing.

Recommendations of the Week: December 5th

Well it's that time again, December! And with December comes winter break, delicious feasts, and of course shopping. "But Ernesto you're forgetting the most important thing that December brings", you might say, and in response I'd say "Oh right silly me, December also brings more Angry Birds!"

Angry Birds Seasons: Winter Wonderham

As always Rovio releases an update to their Angry Birds Seasons game which packs in another set of themed levels to the already massive Angry Birds archive. Like in years past, the levels from this update work like an advent calendar. Each day of the holiday season a new level becomes available for you to launch some birds at pigs (but with holiday spirit). Of course only a few levels are available at the moment, but so far nothing is new as compared to past Angry Birds games. Personally I would have liked to see an Angry Birds Star Wars Christmas themed level pack, so for now I'll just slash my lightsaver on some snowy levels and pretend its Christmas.

Of course the levels are still fun, so I can't complain. Yes I'm tired of playing Angry Birds (though the Star Wars version was great and definitely renewed my interest in the game, if only for that one app though) but I still feel I need to mention every time Rovio updates one of the many games.

If you don't have Angry Birds Seasons then you can grab it here for iOS or here for Android.

Recommendations of the Week: November 28th

Welcome to this week's edition of Recommendations of the Week. Today we look at three awesome YouTube channels.

Vsauce:

I want to talk a little bit about the pure awesomeness that is Vsause and by extension Vsauce 2 and 3. If you haven't heard of the YouTube channel Vsauce you need to hit up this link and check it out immediately, and trust me you won't be let down. Vsauce is this channel that does these great videos that try to answer questions like "What would happen if everyone jumped at once?" or "Why do we have two nostrils?" but the guy behind Vsauce does it in and extremely interesting way that keeps me captivated till the end of every video. There are also tonnes of other videos put out on the channel that show you cool things you can do or buy on the internet and other such information. The Vsauce 2 channel puts out videos about crazy things you'd never think of as well as recaps all of the weirdest things in the news from each month. And the Vsauce 3 channel is all about gaming.

I frequent all three of these channels and today I'm recommending that you do too. You'll find that Vsauce has a video for everyone.

Recommendations of the Week: November 21st

Welcome back to another edition of Recommendations of the Week. Let's begin.

Wii U:

Now I don't actually own a Wii U, but I have very briefly used one, so I'd still like to recommend it. I always get very excited whenever developments are made in any technological field, so naturally I was very excited when I first heard about the Wii U. That was a long time ago though when we first heard rumors of the Wii U, and man am I ever happy the wait it over. I find the Wii U to follow along with Nintendo's whole innovation theme going on. Take the Wii, for instance, which was the first console to really implement motion controls and to bring those motion controls front and centre for the whole world to have easy access too. Or look at the 3DS, though personally my eyes get extremely bothered by the 3D, I still admire their efforts in advancing 3D technology and bringing it to everyday consumers. Once again Nintendo has brought us something completely unlike the competition (as far as consoles go) with the Wii U. And word on the street is that the Wii U is actually pretty awesome. So those are the reasons as to why I'm recommending the Wii U this week.

And don't worry non-North Americans, you only have to wait a short long time till the Wii U arrives in your country.

Recommdendations of the Week: November 14th

Welcome back to another edition of Recommendations of the Week. Today we look at another great book by Christopher Reich.

The First Billion:

I've recommended quite a few books by Christopher Reich in the past so it should come as no surprise to you that I'm back with another one- this time I recommend reading The First Billion. Much like Reich's other books, The First Billion is loaded with espionage and international business. The main character this time round is a millionaire who is trying to save his multi-billion dollar company from bankruptcy, and he's willing to go great lengths to do so. I won't say anymore so that I don't spoil anything.

So go check this book out, it is an awesome read.

Recommendations of the Week: November 7th

Welcome back to another edition of Recommendations of the Week. This week we talk about one of the best movies I've seen in a long time and possibly the best movie to come out of 2012.

Looper:

Looper stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt who plays the role of a "looper". Basically the year is 2044 and these guys called loopers exist to kill off, and more importantly, dispose of the future's unwanted men. In the year 2074 time travel was invented, but outlawed right away- but that doesn't mean it isn't used anymore. The mob bosses of the future have the problem of not being able to get rid of the guys they kill due to futuristic tracking systems, so they send the bodies back 30 years into the past and have loopers waiting there to shoot and dispose of the bodies. But then a new guy takes over in the future and starts "closing all the loops" which means that he has all the future selves of the loopers sent back in time to be killed by their past selves. The only problem for Gordon-Levitt is that his future self is Bruce Willis, and everybody knows how hard it is to kill someone like that. Of course Bruce Willis is back with his own agenda but I don't want to spoil anything more so I'll stop talking now.

The plot of this movie is amazing. There are so many different things going on at once- since you have the whole time travel aspect- which just makes for an awesome story (don't worry though its not to complicated that you get a migraine). The acting is great, music, and everything else is great too. One thing I love is that they did the future right. Most movies say "hey look, its the year 2044 and everyone has flying cars and there are giant sky scrapers covering every square inch of the planet and we habit all the planets, etc, etc". But Looper does it realistically, like the year 2044 is exactly like what it probably will be like. The buildings are pretty similar, technology like cell phones are quite advanced etc. Which is exactly what 2012 is compared to 1982. And yes the time travel thing isn't exactly the most realistic, but that doesn't come for 60 years in the year 2074, and hey maybe we will have time travel by then.

Looper also has the perfect balance of action and story. You get loads of blood and shooting and explosions, but you also get loads of plot and character development. And everything happens for a very logical reason, like no one just decides to take over the world or something for no reason.

All in all everything about this movie is great, and I definitely recommend seeing it. Its a 5/5 all the way.

Recommendations of the Week: October 17th

Hello everybody! Lorl here, you may remember me from such things as: "Citadel? I thought this was a Mass Effect commentary!" and "Why did this dumb chick decide to be an engineer if she can't use a sniper rifle properly?" as well as my upcoming hit "I love the yaoi pairings in Kingdom Hearts, how dare she insult my love of SoraxRiku!?!" Haha, good times. Today I'll be debuting my first written piece for AppsPlus, enjoy!

The Fifth Element (Not to be mistaken with ‘The Fourth Kind’)

If you’re a fan of cheesy sci-fi, Bruce Willis, and Milla Jovovich in sexy futuristic clothing then this is the movie for you! This is definitely my favorite science fiction movie to date, and it was made over 10 years ago. Unlike most of the modern space movies that rely heavily on CGI for their aliens, all of the creatures in this movie are either costumed actors or puppets. Personally, I find the Mangalores much more realistic than Jar Jar Binks. Don’t get me wrong though, this movie isn't praised for its realism. It never takes itself too seriously, and the humor is abundant.

I'm often skeptical when it comes to romance in movies, because more often than not it's just tacked on for no particular reason. Even movies based on romance such as The Notebook seem really bland and shallow. I wonder why? Ahem, moving on. Even so, I didn't see the relationship between Corbin (Willis) and Leeloo (Jovovich) to be fake or forced in any way. I'd have to say that my only complaint is that I can never get enough of this movie! I wish they'd made it into a video game... Oh wait.

Because everyone knows the best games are based on movies.

Imgur

Imgur is truly an amazing thing, and to think that I'd never even heard of it before reddit. To anyone who is currently using photobucket, or (gasp) facebook to upload all of their pictures, your life is about to improve.

Now before I get started, know that imgur is meant for images only. If you want to upload a .gif you'll need to use something else. The whole point of this site is to let you upload your pictures quickly and painlessly. You'll even get several different links to your newly uploaded photo so that you can share it with anyone!

Imgur is actually so simple that even my computer illiterate dad could learn to use it. You can upload photos 3 ways:

Directly from your computer.

By copy/pasting the direct image URL from something like google.

Or by dragging the image directly from another tab or window.

The third method is my favorite because the imgur page glosses over in grey to make sure you actually want to upload the image that you're dragging.

It's one of the simple pleasures in my life.

An account isn't required to upload pictures to imgur, but it's a good thing to have if you want to keep track of your images. They don't ask for any of your personal information other than your e-mail address, and I've never received spam from them. Also, should you want to keep some/all of your images, uh... Private. You can enable your privacy settings to make sure that nobody can see what you upload without a direct link.

Recommendations of the Week: October 10th

Welcome back to more recommendations! Today we look at another great book from one of my favourite authors.

The Runner:

The Runner is the second book written by Christopher Reich and it came out back in 2000 and man is it ever a great read. If you've been with us for a while you'll have noticed that I recommended a few other books by Christopher Reich because they're all just so great. Reich writes espionage styled books and the Runner is set in Germany just after World War II when Germany is in ruins and the Americans, French, British, and Russians have taken control. I won't say any more so that I don't ruin anything- not that I could though, there are so many twists in this book that you never know what is going to happen, which is one of the things I really love in a book. So what are you waiting for? Go check it out.

You can find The Runner everywhere books are sold as well as here on Kobo.

Recommendations of the Week: September 12th

My summer recommendations got me thinking about two things I really should have recommended a long time ago. As such, these recommendations are comic themed

Calvin and Hobbes

I hope you've heard of this. If you haven't, you should probably go and hear about it. Written by Bill Waterson... this is, in my opinion, they ONLY good newspaper comic. Ever. Everything from the art to the humour is all great. It strikes true to life, and covers a massive scope of topics. Read it. Like, go buy it and read it. Don't go and be cheap and find it online or something, buy one of the collections.

The Cartoon Guide to the Universe

This cartoon guide is... interesting. And comprehensive. That's important too. It's a funny, and often opinionated, trip through time. I heartily recommend the entire series. Note that the last two in the series are re-branded 'The Cartoon History of the Modern World' but they are essentially the same. A word of warning however, this is not for everybody, people who are offended by different opinions will probably be offended at least once in this book, not that it goes out of its way to do so or anything...
